Google does it again, Google shocks again, call it what ever you want but Google has announced plans to convert its popular internet browser application Chrome into a fully fledged operating system initially targetting the netbooks.
Just when I go to sleep peacefully thinking what Google’s competitors are coming up with, and then Google drops another bomb.
This should be a wake up call for Micros0ft. Google is becoming bigger by the day. This “open-source” path is really working in all its favour. Android and Chrome browser are perhaps the prime examples with their early success.
Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.
Well said sir, I may not like the Chrome, But I do like the challenge / threat it will pose to Mac OS and Windows and benefit us users like never before.
I keep saying repeatedly, success of any hardware or hardware supporting application in this case an operating system relies more on 3rd party developers than themselves. Sony PlayStation’s success over Gamecube, Sega’s famed Dreamcast was defined by the number of 3rd party developer support.
Google has always attracted developers. Maybe not much in Android, for reasons other than code itself, but we’ll save the judgement for later as Android is still in the early stages of developement
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.
Whats clear from the above extract, Google will be making Chrome OS look kinda like a web app itself. Designed solely for online web 2.0+ applications. And by that we mean almost all new websites coming up. There are people who see no issues with having all their files/lives online 24/7. Then there are some few old school dialup liking people.. a little like me. Dialup in this case refers to the clear distinction/distance one would like to maintain between online networks and home computers.
Applications developers make on this new OS will be cross-platform enabled. Meaning, An app made for Chrome OS will be executable in Firefox. Exciting!
Surprise is that they’re not calling it Android. They probably see some benefit in that. Maybe Chrome OS will be defined in similar terms an open source stack of Web applications.

i tried Chrome OS and it is pretty much like a scaled down version of Ubuntu. Chrome is just based on Linux and there is nothing new about it.

I think the actual devices will be nicer once they come out. Also people are so used to looking at the desktop icons without any purpose as compared to what google’s idea for chrome os is. So get your focus out of desktop icons which microsoft changes every version to attract the cosumers. It will take time.
