Android ranks second in Open source projects

Black Duck Software report throws some great news. Open source projects in 2008 for Android are only second to iPhone at 191, while iPhone is at 266. A big lead by iPhone indeed. Its great to see that Android is catching up quick beating all other mobile platforms. But considering the fact that Android phone hasn’t been around for even a year with only one device out and the generated interest in open source community is nothing short of incredible.  Much of it ofcourse comes from a few factors that programmers do consider:

  • Android is Open source. A “practice what you preach” situation promoted by Google has always worked.
  • Mobile phone applications at the right time and the right kind can make a ton of money for programmers specially since the App Store and Android Market.

The interesting thing here is that the Android platform has only been out since October. So we’re seeing a larger number of open source projects given that the platform was only officially released a few months ago.

Here are the rankings

Their analysis also shows that the number of open source projects of Mobile platforms grew an astonishing 55% compound annual growth rate.  It probably has a lot to do with the introduction of the new Mobile OS… amm Android i think ;) .

Palm’s WebOS will give some tough competition after the “Pre” launch. Many claim WebOS’s SDK video, that was recently out, is based similarly on Java. Apps arent exactly executables but extensions utilising libraries.
