Palm’s Back with WebOS at CES 2009

Palm’s back with a blast. Palm is now the front runner in its quest to recapture the market. At its event in CES 2009, Palm showed off its latest hardware: the Pre, having very impressive specs, great aesthetic design (which Palm always had) and WIRELESS RECHARGING? thats InSANE! I’ll exaggerate on that later..

Here are the Pre hardware specs

  • DISPLAY: 3.1 inch 480 x 320 touch screen WITH MultiTouch
  • Accelerometer
  • WIFI and 3G
  • GPS
  • stereo Bluetooth
  • Memory: 8GB internal storage
  • 3 MP Camera
  • 3.5mm Headset Jack
  • Slide out keyboard
  • A Great accessory called Touchstone. You just place the phone over it and it starts recharging. thats KILLER TECH!

Whats so special? apart from the killer touchstone? hmm.. Heres something that’ll shake the very foundations of Apple, Nokia, OHA, Microsoft. The WebOS. The new operating system of Palm previously codenamed “Nova“.

The OS’s got everything one can think of right now. Lets face it, all- specially touch interface OS have been on a similar path. They all look and feel kinda same with some organic differences. And WebOS is no different in the first glance. But looks like Palm has been secretly listening to all minor complaints by iPhone/Android users and they’ve come up with their own style.

Interface, as I said earliar, isnt all that different, with a familiar “Dashboard” on the botton of the screen with Icons-shortcuts to applications. A nice default background etc..

Things to note here is the finger-directive functioning. Kinda like gestures but not exactly. Your Slide horizontally to switch between applications. And slide vertically up to get a list of apps and start a new one. This is a welcome feature. Uptil now Android had a better way of switching between applications. Others have a very sturdy method of switching, the worst one being on S60 where u keep pressing on the menu button. Yukk!

WebOS has got a “unified” contact list. An example of their new concept called “Synergy“. All apps can seemlessly get information from the internet. It’ll grab your contacts from Gmail, Facebook as you configure. Again a great feature.

Certainly this has been the most exciting announcement till now at this years CES. All I can say is Palm is back in the game. And with its new flagship device the “Pre” Palm is all set to recapture atleast its own niche market if not more..  What remains to be seen is its time-lag between applications, how does the OS function oragnically, how smooth is it? and is it Backward compatible.

A new comparison will emerge soon..
Android vs WebOS ??!!
What do you think?

    Dear;
A nice review on Palm pre, the giant once disturbed by Microsoft. But the cool thing is Palm is back with its innovation. I’m sure palm fans got the fuel back :)
but I’ve one concerned the WebOS source is not release yet which means no complete openess which openmoko’s and android’s have.
Please correct me if i’m wrong

    Regards

I stumbled upon this site from Bing and just wanted to say thanks for the reviews you wrote about on this webpage. I am thinking about about buying one myself.

I’ve had my Pre since shortly soon after release and am glad to locate (by means of this forum) that I can now set a ring tone on incoming text messages and can lookup by way of e-mails and such. Now is there any hope for an upcoming launch where I can research my calendar? Would make my job very much easier, discovering dates of last appointments. No other complaints, except that yesterday I used to be in and out of Sprint support (not unusual). I believe I had been roaming, and looked at my calendar. Everything from the calendar was just one hour earlier than what I had input. The clock was just one hour early as nicely. I had been frightened to death–then, the moment we got back into Sprint service again, anything was normalized. Has this happened to any person else?? Seeking forward to answers, but please don’t forget, I’m no techie and speak English rather than technospeak.
