UIQ Technology Collapses, Files Bankruptcy

Its official, UIQ Technology backed by Sony Ericsson has filed for bankruptcy in Sweden. Reasons probably the current financial melt down globally. Inability to effectively challenge emerging mobile interfaces. New phones offering UIQ failed to impress many.

UIQ Technology was only backed by Sony Ericsson and Motorola to a certain extent since the acquisition of Symbian Operating System. The demise was apparently inevitable. It could pull on cuz of Motorola that had planned about 11 UIQ based smartphones for 2009 but later Moto-reorganisation resulted  in cancellation of all the then UIQ based phones.

Lets pull back a second and applaud UIQ Labs. Sony Ericsson’s P900 was a dream phone when it was launched. Much like the iPhone a year ago. Back then, UIQ raised the bar of touch screen phones while Symbian S60 continued to remain in the traditional handset market.

A little History: UIQ was initially developed by Ericsson. Probably in response to the many pocket PCs floating around those days. You know, the colourless screens with icons – “powered by windows CE”. Later acquired by Symbian Ltd. And more recently by Sony Ericsson.
