Unleash Android by JailBreaker

Jail Breaking is now possible in Android – T-Mobile G1 thanks to XDA-Developers. For all you amatures, JailBreaking is refered to gaining root access of a software thereby gaining full read and write rights on the phone.

how will this JailBreak bring change in Android’s Openness still remains to be seen since Android is already open to all 3rd party applications. How will we benefit from this?

Well, a free unlocking app could come in handy.. wont it? Apart from the obvious, We might be able to get rid of some Google annoyance. Like using G1 will full potential without being able to login to Gmail. Thats a complete application re-write which is as tough as removing mayonaise from a BigMac without traces. And how about installing applications on memory cards and not on G1st internal memory which is sadly, surprisingly miniscule for a “Device”.

Unix! The word itself opens up endless possibilities. A simple app that takes Unix command line advantage can be programmed. Bots/Daemons can be coded. Say you want to report your location to your personal computer automatically. (lets leave out privacy issues for later..)

What gets me psyched about Android is the possibility of running Android on another mobile phone with an emulator. We’ve already seen Nokia N810 running Android.

Here comes the scary part..

  1. Applications having root access have obvious potential to turn malicious if intended. We might require a monitoring app to prevent such activity.
  2. Google has already recognised the hack is working on a patch. The question is, how far is google willing to go? And will it hurt our sentiments ? Hopefully not!.

Hence our android journey has just begun and we cant wait for what new Android’s got to offer.

Steps to JailBreak G1: from modmygphone.com. CAUTION: Attempt only if you know what your doing.

Turn on WiFi in the G1 (Settings > Wireless Controls > Wi-Fi). Make sure you’re connected to a network.

  1. Start up PTerminal (search in the Market) and you'll get a prompt once its launched.
  2. Enter cd system and hit Enter.
  3. Enter cd bin and hit Enter.Enter telnetd and hit Enter. You've now started telnet on your G1.
  4. Enter netstat and hit Enter. You'll now see your G1's IP address. You can also find this in the Settings > Wireless Controls > Wi-Fi > and click on your network you're connected to. It will show you your IP. Start up Terminal on your OS X machine, or bring up a command prompt on your Windows box.
  5. Type telnet [your.ip.address.we.just.found] and hit Enter/Return. So, if your IP was 192.168.1.101, you'd type telnet 192.168.1.101 and hit Enter/Return.
  6. You are logged in as root now. To remount the system file as read write, type mount -oremount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system from the Terminal/Command Prompt and hit Enter/Return.

Great blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere? A theme like yours with a few simple adjustements would really make my blog jump out. Please let me know where you got your design. Appreciate it
